Frozen - A Warm Hug

Description

This is a commission I actually received from my job. My boss, who has seen my art, wanted to commission something from me for a present for his daughter's birthday (which is actually today!) Never thought I'd be getting commissions at work XD

So this is a picture of Olaf doing what he does best, giving warm hugs, to the character that probably needed it the most: Elsa. It was very interesting, doing this picture, because it occurred to me that if Olaf had been able to spend more than a few moments near Elsa, Anna would never have had to get her heart frozen in order to show Elsa that love is the key to controlling the ice within. I also think it was not very well touched on that Olaf is a SENTIENT being made BY Elsa. She can create ice and stuff, but even she has to take a moment to contemplate the fact that her powers allowed her to create LIFE during that one scene of the movie. But that was it, there was no further mention about it. We see Elsa creating Olaf during her big song, Let it Go, but as far as we knew, he was just a snowman like before. Then suddenly he's ALIVE? I feel like they have a bond as creator and creation that was totally ignored, so it was great to take this opportunity to put some attention back on that bond.

I adore Frozen, I really do. I literally have nearly every lyric memorized for every song in the movie, and then some. But there are quite a few things that just really frustrated me about it. I won't go into great detail, but the lack of communication throughout the movie drove me crazy. It was one of those instances where if the characters just talked, like human beings normally do, then most of what happens could've been avoided, which would've made more room for certain aspects of the plot that were shoved out, such as Elsa and Anna growing up. There are lots of songs that were cut from the movie, and many of which were obviously intended for when Elsa and Anna were still children. Which tells me that in order to make the movie short enough to produce, they cut out the growing up part in favor of 'focusing' on what the movie was really about: Miscommunication. It's almost enough to make a guy want to make a fancomic and do it the RIGHT way. But we all know I already have WAY too many comic projects as it is XD

Anyway! There's not a whole lot more to say about the pic itself. Did a loooot of screwing around with textures this time around, which I quite enjoyed. For instance, I did a flesh texture overlay for Elsa's skin, just to give it a little more depth and I love the subtle details it added.

Needless to say this piece, clocking in at over 6 hours of production time, is definitely going in my portfolio folder.
